Sholay is a 1975 Bollywood action film, written and directed by Ramesh Sippy. It is one of the highest-grossing films in India and one of the rare Hindi films to be exhibited worldwide without cuts. The story follows Jai, a poor young man who joins sides with Thakur Baldev Singh Grewal to avenge his father's death in the village of Durgapur where Sholay takes place.It was restored by its world rights holder Ramesh Sippy and co-produced by his son Jitendra Sippy in 2005 with government support and cooperation from India's Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. The restoration work began in 2001, when the negatives of all the three original versions were found in the archives of Amitabh Bachchan. The film was digitally restored at L'Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, Italy.Following its success, Sholay inspired numerous works of art and entertainment, including a musical stage play by Viju Shah titled Sholay Live. It has been broadcast more than any other Indian film on Indian television. Made on a budget of Rs. 2 Crores, it broke all box office records to become a blockbuster at the box office grossing Rs. 30 Crores in 1975. Adjusted for inflation, its net gross in India is approximately Rs 20 crore (). It was shown on 18 August 2013 on the occasion of its 35th anniversary through a live screening over Doordarshan. The film was remade in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi as Raman The Warrior, Shivaji, and Sholay respectively with some changes to the original script. It inspired several stage plays and musicals based on the film. After its release, it received positive reviews and was declared a hit at the box office. The success of the film led to the making of two similar films: "Ganesh Gaitonde" (1976) and "Sholay Two" (1982). It became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time, earning Rs. 20 crore in India, and later surpassed by "3 Idiots" (2009) with a lifetime gross of Rs 32 Crores. In its original theatrical run, the film grossed Rs. 25 crore domestically at the box office, while its lifetime theatrical gross stood at over 50 Crores () in India.In 1977 "Filmfare" gave it a Best Film Award and a special Jury Award for 'Best Action Sequences'. The film was released throughout the world after a successful run in India, and became a blockbuster overseas. In 1978, "Time Out" listed it as one of the top 10 films of all time. In 1995 "Time" magazine named it to their list of 'All-time 100 Movies'.
